Pete Zannis, USPTA Head Tennis Professional
Pete Zannis has been the head tennis professional at the Johnson City Country Club for over 25 years. He has developed one of the state and south's premier junior tennis programs. Pete played at East Tennessee State University where he won the Tennessee Intercollegiate Singles and Doubles titles. Pete continued to play competitively after college, winning the Southern Hardcourt Championships in 1981 as well as the Ridgefields Open and the Bristol Pro in 1997.
Since coming to the Johnson City Country Club, Pete has coaches hundreds of state, southern, and nationally ranked junior players. Many of these have gone on to play intercollegiate tennis at colleges and universities around the nation, including the University of Tennessee, Clemson, Tulane, University of Illinois, Trinity, College of Charleston, James Madison, ETSU, and UT Chattanooga just to name a few. Pete has also coached 3 players who have gone on to compete on the satellite tour.
Pete started coaching the Science Hill High School Tennis Team in 2000. In just 9 years his players have won 5 State team titles, breaking the school record for the most team titles won in any sport. His players also won 4 individual State Championships as well as placing second 4 times.
Pete was inducted into the East Tennessee State University Hall of Fame in 1996 for contributions to tennis in the community and outstanding play while attending ETSU. Most recently, Pete was named the TSSAA Coach of the Year for 2008.
